Guan Yu History:
Guan Yu was a general who served under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han Dynasty of China. Along with Zhang Fei, he had a brotherly relationship with Liu Bei and accompanied him on most of his early exploits. Guan Yu played a key role in the events that led to the end of the Han Dynasty and Liu Bei's founding of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. While he is remembered for his loyalty to Liu Bei, he is also known for repaying Cao Cao's kindness by killing Zhang Liang, a general under Cao Cao's rival Xu Huang, at the Battle of Weitou. After Liu Bei took control of Yi Province in 214, Guan Yu remained in Jingzhou to govern and defend the area for about seven years.
In 219, while fighting Cao Cao's forces at the Battle of Fancheng, Liu Bei's ally Sun Quan broke the Sun-Liu alliance and sent his general Lü Meng to conquer Liu Bei's territory in Jing Province. By the time Guan Yu learned of the loss of Jing Province after the defeat at Wancheng, it was too late. He was later captured in an ambush by Sun Quan's forces and executed.
Guan Yu's life was so celebrated and his achievements so revered that after his death he was deified during the Sui Dynasty. Through generations of storytelling, culminating in the 14th-century historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms, his deeds and moral character were highly exalted, making Guan Yu one of the most popular models of loyalty and righteousness in East Asia. He is still revered today by many Chinese in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and many overseas Chinese communities.
In religion, he is revered as (Guan Gong). He is a deity worshiped in Chinese folk religion, popular Confucianism and Chinese Buddhism, and small shrines to him are almost ubiquitous in traditional Chinese shops and restaurants. His hometown of Yuncheng even named an airport after him.
Guan Yu Review:
Guan Yu is currently one of the best infantry commanders (top 3) in combat and rallying, with an active skill damage coefficient of 2000.
Guan Yu should only be used as a main commander. If he is used as a sub-commander, his active skill damage will decrease from a damage multiplier of 2000 to 1000 and he will become mediocre.
Guan Yu's Specialty requires him to have the Shield effect to increase his skill damage by 15% for 3 seconds. However, none of his other skills grant the Shield effect. Therefore, you will need to equip him with a legendary accessory to grant the Shield effect. Pairing Guan Yu with Alexander or Charles Martel will not trigger his Specialty skill as their shield effects will not last long enough.
Prioritize upgrading skills for Guan Yu:
5155 – This is the best skill set for him in open combat if you don't have enough legendary commander sculptures to experience him, as his second skill is only useful for rallying.
5555 – If you have enough Universal Legendary Commander Sculptures, you should Specialize Guan Yu for his Specialization skill, but note that he needs a Shield to increase the skill damage from his Specialization skill. To get the Shield, you will need to equip Guan Yu with the legendary accessory Lucky Coin by Scolas (has a 10% chance to get a Shield that absorbs damage for 2 seconds when attacked, can be activated once every 5 seconds).
