Gorgo History:

Gorgo reigned as Queen of Sparta in the early 5th century BC. She ruled Sparta alongside her husband Leonidas I and played a key role in the fight against the invading Persian Empire. Under the Achaemenids, Persia had grown into a huge empire and sought to extend its reach into the central Mediterranean. Led by Leonidas I and Gorgo, the Spartans stopped the Persians at Thermopylae, buying time for the Athenian navy and playing a key role in the final Greek victory.

Much has been written about Gorgo in historical records, at a time when even important women were often relegated to footnotes and margins. This speaks volumes about her considerable influence on Spartan politics and her prestige among her contemporaries. It is said that at the age of eight she was giving advice to her father, then king of Sparta. After becoming queen, it was she who first discovered the impending Persian invasion.
